Kaunislehto Open-Air Museum

Kaunislehto Open-Air Museum represents the typical housing found in Hyrynsalmi at the turn of the 20th century. Some of the buildings have been brought from various sections of the parish and erected on the sites of the former houses. As a result of the original layout, it’s possible to take a trip back in time to a century ago.

Hyrynsalmi Wooden Church

Hyrynsalmi Wooden Church was built in 1786.  Jaakko Rijf was the builder and draughtsman of the church. This church is a northern cruciform church characteristic of its time with equal arms. The altarpiece was painted by Gustaf Hedman of Oulu during the 1830s. In 1840, a bell tower was completed under the direction of Jaakko Kuorikoski, in which there are two clocks: the smaller one is from 1787 and the larger one is from 1873.

Jaeger Cabin

Ukko J. A. Heikkinen of Halla had a hidden cabin built for Jaegers (light infantrymen) in Hyrynsalmi on an island on Lake Saarijärvi, which later came to be called Jaeger Island.

The construction of the cabin was initiated during the early spring in 1914, and it was completed at an appropriate time for the use of the Jaeger movement. Jaeger Cabin is one of the area’s most distinguished cultural historical sites.

The Municipality of Hyrynsalmi arranges hiking trips to Jaeger Cabin.
