Komulanköngäs Waterfall
A few kilometres away from Ukkohalla, you’ll find Komulanköngäs
Waterfall, which is 12 metres high. Originally called Lauttaköngäs, it
is situated along the Syväjoki River, whose source is Lake Lauttajärvi.
The mill located by the waterfall is in a watercourse dug separately
from the river, which the old folks used to call “rosvohotu” (“robber’s
hat”). A popular hiking route – the UKK trail – proceeds right next to
Komulanköngäs Waterfall.
The journey is about five kilometres from Ukkohalla to Komulanköngäs.
Hiidenkirkko and Vorlokki Canyons
The Hiidenkirkko and Vorlokki Canyons are deep rock crevices which may
have snow and ice at their base even during the torrid days of
mid-summer.
Vorlokki Canyon is located along the UKK trail between Hyrynsalmi and
Komulanköngäs, and Hiidenkirkko is situated in Hakokylä at the eastern
end of Lake Ylä-Tervajärvi.
Vorlokki Canyon is found along the Pieni-Tuomivaara hiking trail. Hiidenkirkko is located about 40 kilometres from Ukkohalla.
